A multifaceted personality, Lakshmi Amma – as she was lovingly called – was a journalist with the skill of crafting words to persuade her audience, a trained Carnatic classical musician and a practicing visual artist by passion. She used all the skills she had to channelise her energy and resources for a vital purpose.
Along her journey as a journalist, she crossed paths with certain dying visual and performing art forms, the preservation of which she deemed imperative. Lakshmi Amma documented the life and work of many such artists through articles and documentaries, eventually becoming a great critic, collector and curator of art herself. Eventually, she also found it just to facilitate activities based on environmental conservation.
Hailing from one of the oldest families settled in Madras, she used her standing in the society to mobilise people around her and her resources towards such social purposes, creating genuine channels to do charity and make a real difference, albeit inconspicuously.
In 2015, she formalised her ‘purpose’ and thus the Kalpalakshmi Charitable Trust came into being. In due course of time, she donated all her tangible possessions to serve the causes of education, art and environment. Even the house she was living in was donated to Sevalaya, an organisation that works for orphaned children, destitute women and senior citizens.
After Lakshmi Amma’s death in 2022, the trust ensures that her legacy carries on, undisturbed.
On this day, we pay tribute to her spirit of generosity and compassion. We also pledged to carry her legacy forward and are striving towards more, everyday.
